Description: Diagnose and treat lung diseases, including asthma, COPD, and emphysema
Perform pulmonary function tests to measure lung capacity, airflow, and gas exchange
Perform sleep studies to diagnose sleep disorders like sleep apnea
Obtain biopsies
Manage certain conditions

Pulmonary function tests

Measure tidal volume, minute volume, vital capacity, and more
Measure respiratory muscle function
Measure gas exchange during exercise

Conditions treated by pulmonologists

Emphysema, which damages the air sacs in the lungs

Interstitial lung disease, which causes scarring of the lungs
Occupational lung disease, which is caused by inhaling toxic substances in the workplace

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in biology, physical sciences, or a related field.
Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
3 to 7 years’ internship and clinical residency training, specializing in pulmonology.
Valid and active medical license in the state you wish to practice.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Outstanding research and analytical skills.
