- Safety officers ensure an organizations safe and compliant operation by implementing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) strategies. Their duties include:
Risk assessment: Assessing the workplace to identify risks and how to prevent them
Safety policies: Creating and sharing a formal OHS policy
Safety guidelines: Enforcing rules and conducting audits to ensure safe operations
Safety training: Providing regular training and education to staff on safety measures, including hazards, how to avoid them, and what to do in an emergency
Accident investigation: Investigating incidents or near-misses and gathering evidence to determine causes
Hazardous situations: Identifying and monitoring hazardous situations, often including risk categorization
Workplace safety: Minimizing hazards and proactively reducing risk in the workplace
Communication: Collaborating about safety and health throughout the organization
Employee engagement: Driving employee engagement and meaningful involvement

- Requirements and skills
Proven experience as safety officer
In depth knowledge of legislation (e.g. OSHA/EPA) and procedures
Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety
Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
Proficient in MS Office; Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus
Outstanding organizational skills
Diligent with great attention to detail
Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics
