Description
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who diagnoses, treats, and prevents eye and visual system disorders:
Diagnosis and treatment: Ophthalmologists use medical and surgical skills to diagnose and treat a range of eye conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, squints, and eye injuries.
Surgery: Ophthalmologists perform and supervise surgical procedures.
Prescriptions: Ophthalmologists prescribe and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses to correct vision problems. They also prescribe or administer medications to treat ophthalmic conditions.
Research: Many ophthalmologists participate in scientific research on the causes and cures for eye diseases and vision disorders.
Other health problems: Because they are medical doctors, ophthalmologists can sometimes recognize other health problems that aren directly related to the eye.
Postoperative care: Ophthalmologists provide or direct the provision of postoperative care.
Management: Ophthalmologists may move into management roles, such as a clinical lead.
Teaching: Ophthalmologists may opt for teaching and training roles to help shape the next generation of ophthalmologists.
Ophthalmologists must be able to manage their time well to treat patients efficiently. They often continuously shift focus between various tasks and appointments.
