Description: Responsibilities
Diagnose and treat
Identify and treat illnesses, infections, and birth defects in newborns
Coordinate care
Work with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other specialists to ensure newborns receive the care they need
Provide support
Offer emotional support to parents and help them understand their babys condition
Perform procedures
Assist with high-risk deliveries and perform procedures like heart-lung bypasses
Monitor conditions
Order tests like X-rays, ultrasounds, and blood tests to monitor the babys condition
Provide nutrition
Ensure newborns receive the proper nutrition for growth and healing
Follow up
Provide short-term follow-up care for newborns after they are discharged from the NICU
Conduct research
Participate in clinical trials and research on newborn development and illnesses
Neonatologists may also be involved in prenatal care for women with pregnancies diagnosed with fetal abnormalities.

Requirements: A medical degree in neonatology and the successful completion of a residency and fellowship.
A license and certification to practice neonatology.
A willingness to work long hours and remain on-call for emergency situations.
The ability to work under pressure and stress.
Strong communication skills and patience and empathy towards patients and their families.
Strong dedication and motivation for helping newborn infants.
