Description
Ensuring the security and confidentiality of all medical records, both electronic and written
Managing staff
Supervising, guiding, and evaluating the staff in the medical records department
Ensuring accuracy
Ensuring that the information in medical records is complete, accurate, and only available to authorized personnel
Maintaining records
Establishing and maintaining a medical record system that meets department, national, and accreditation body standards
Responding to requests
Responding to requests for patient information from individuals, agencies, hospitals, and courts
Preparing reports
Preparing reports and summaries for oral and written presentation
Analyzing records
Analyzing and evaluating medical records to apply established standards, regulations, and laws
Identifying training needs
Identifying staff development and training needs and ensuring that training is obtained
A medical records supervisor typically needs to have knowledge of medical terminology and classification systems, as well as hospital policies and procedures. They may also need to be certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
A minimum of 2 years experience in a similar role.
Advanced understanding of medical terminology and administration processes.
Proficient in information management programs and MS Office.
Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational skills.
