Description
Chest physicians treat a variety of conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. They also specialize in sleep-related breathing disorders like sleep apnea.
Responsibilities
Chest physicians perform a variety of tasks, including:
Diagnosing: Chest physicians use medical history, physical exams, imaging studies, and other tests to diagnose conditions.
Developing treatment plans: Chest physicians work with patients to develop treatment plans that may include medication, breathing exercises, lifestyle changes, or other interventions.
Performing procedures: Chest physicians may perform procedures like bronchoscopies to examine the lungs or remove tissue samples for biopsy.
Educating patients: Chest physicians educate patients about their conditions and how to manage them.
Managing critical care patients: Chest physicians often work in critical care settings, where they manage patients who require mechanical ventilation or other life support measures.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in biology, physical sciences, or a related field.
Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
3 to 7 years’ internship and clinical residency training, specializing in pulmonology.
Successful completion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
Certification by The American Board of Internal Medicine in pulmonology.
Valid and active medical license in the state you wish to practice.
Exceptional attention to detail.

Excellent communicator who can empathize with patients.
